Start A Business Online Doing What You Love

Start a business online and do what you love.

'Start a business online!' my friend said.  'It would be perfect for you'.

And she was right.  Being a free spirit, what better way to earn an income than doing something that is based on a passion of mine, and that I can do from anywhere in the world with an internet connection?

But the chances are that if you’ve ever had the same idea, and spent any time researching it -  you’ve probably been just a tad overwhelmed with all the information out there as to how to do it.

There must be literally 1000’s of articles about ‘how to start a business online and make money’ or making money using Amazon, eBay or Etsy.

But really, if it was that simple, then everyone would be doing it, and they would all be successful – right?

The thing is that starting a business online is a wonderful idea, and for those of us who value freedom above all else – it’s the ultimate gig… and even better, you can start your online business part-time while you build it up to a level that brings in a full time income.

But creating a successful online business can be a little tricky, unless you know what you’re doing.

The good news is, I've found a fantastic way to cut through all the overwhelm and get everything you need in one place so you can build a successful online business.

That 'way' is with SiteSell's SBI system.

There is a lot more to starting a business online than just slapping up a website and finding a product to sell.  Let's walk through a brief outline of the steps needed to start a successful business you'll love, and how SBI can help you do that.

6 Steps To Turning Your Passion Into A Business

Step 1 - Choose A Topic

Your first decision is what subject or niche will you build your business around.  Do you have a specific product you want to sell, or some knowledge or expertise that other people will benefit from?

It could be a hobby that you want to share with others, or teach them.  For example, if you love golf, you could start a website about golf tips, choosing golf clubs, or golfing holidays.

If you're passionate about gardening – share your tips and knowledge with others.

If nothing specific immediately jumps to mind, start by making a list of everything you have some interest in, or have detailed knowledge of.  For example:

  • Computers
  • Cooking on a budget
  • Vegan Lifestyle
  • Pets – Dogs, Cats, Horses
  • Losing weight
  • Gaining Health
  • Sport
  • Cars
  • Needlework
  • Home decorating
  • Cake decorating
  • Growing a cactus
  • Wild birds of southern Africa
  • How to write your memoirs
  • Photography

Even if you don't realise it - you do at least one thing so easily that you think everyone else can do it too…  Things you think are every-day – like making jam or managing a family of 4 around a full time job - others really struggle with and would love to find out how you do those things.

Once you've chosen your broad topics, break them down into sub categories.  For example:

Cooking becomes baking, making pies, cooking for a family of 4 on a budget, organic produce, health food, Italian food...

Eventually you need to drill down to a specific subject that will be your ‘niche’.

The SBI system will not only help you sift through thousands of ideas, but also give you the tools to make sure your chosen topic is one that is in high demand so you will have a ready-made tribe of people already looking for the information or product you provide.

Step 2 - What Platform Will You Use?

This site uses the SBI platform - which is an all-in-one hosting & business building package.

For either US$29 per month or US$299 per year it includes hosting, your domain name as well as full training as to how to build your blog or website.

However, there are other platforms you can use if you want to 'go it alone'

Wordpress is downloadable blogging software that is used for more than 25% of the world's blogs.  It's the most stable and the most popular blogging platform in the world, It comes in two versions - Wordpress.com and Wordpress.org

Wordpress.com is free - but free usually means limitations as well - and unless you're just setting up a personal blog, I don't reccommend it

Wordpress.org is the choice to make if you're building a blog or website as a business.  You will need to buy hosting as well, but it's worth it as the functionality is far better than it is with Wordpress.com.

If you choose this option, you will need external hosting.  There are a raft of companies to choose from - but I recommend Bluehost simply because they're affordable (around US$3.95), reputable and include a free domain name.  This is great if you're just starting out on a budget.

With SBI you can either build a drag and drop website or use Wordpress instead if you like.  Using the SBI platform you won't need to buy separate hosting as it's included in your monthly or annual fee.

Step 3 - Choose a Memorable Domain Name

Once you've decided on your platform - you will need to choose a domain name, the name of your business that will be incorporated into your URL.  Take some time with this as It should be something as simple as possible and easy to remember, whilst saying something about your niche.

SBI will not only help you choose the best domain name for your business, but will also register it for you too.

Step 4 - Create Great Content

Once all this is figured out, the next step is to start creating content… writing about your area of interest or expertise.

This is the fun part, but you need to do the groundwork above first – the planning will ensure that you choose a topic that people are looking for advice on.  Otherwise you could go through all this only to find that you struggle to find visitors and therefore customers for your product or service.

Think you can't write?  There is tons of guidance within the SBI system that will guide you as to how to do that.  You don't have to be a born writer to make this work, as their tutorials will show you.

Most people think that that's the end of it.  That you just start writing and sharing and that people (customers) will find your site and love you and you’ll start making money.

This is the biggest stumbling block.  There are literally thousands of beautiful websites with amazing content out there… but nobody ever sees them….

All that effort leads to… chirrup chirrup (lone cricket... tumbleweed blows across the screen...)

Why?

Because you need to let people know you’re there – that you have information to share and/or products to sell…

So the next step is…

Step 5 - Get Visitors To Your Site

As you’re creating your content, you need to learn how to let people know you’re open for business. There are various ways you can go about this, and it can be a little daunting if you have to do it all yourself .

There's a lot to learn and understand … but this is a really important step.  If you start a business online - you must make sure your customers can find you.

Luckily this is a huge part of the SBI system.  Right from choosing your topic or niche, to optimising your site for search engines, through to writing your content and sharing information... you will be building your site to naturally attract your ideal visitors - all without having to be search engine savvy.

Step 6  - Monetize Your Site or Blog

Finally we get to the step that is going to make your business a real business.  So many people get this wrong and implement this step too early.  But if you choose this style of online business you must do all the other 5 steps first, before you get to this one.

There are many reasons - but the main one is - people need to know and trust you before they will be willing to engage with you by purchasing something from you.

Even if you're looking at a passive income such as Google Ads or becoming an affiliate, you still need to bring in a healthy number of visitors, and you cannot do that with a 3 page, hastily thrown-together website, no matter what you've read out there.

This is just a quick overview - but as you can see, there is a lot more to setting up an online business than you probably realised at first glance.

So, if you want guidance through the entire process from deciding what your niche should be, right through to how to make money from it, including how to write good content attracting your ideal visitor, the platform that will offer you all that and more is Sitesell's SBI System.

Start A Business Online - Successfully

SBI stands for Site Build It.  But as you've seen, this system doesn't just help you build a website or a wordpress site, it shows you how to start a business online, step by step.

SBI is the system I’ve used to build this site from scratch.  There is work involved, but there is so much support that you know exactly what to do each step of the way.  And if you do get stuck (or you're in a hurry) you can get professional one-on-one help and advice too - or they will even do it for you!

As I mentioned before, SBI! also works with Wordpress, so if you’re keen on using Wordpress, or you already have a site set up with them, you can still have the awesomeness of SBI at your fingertips.
